by Brian Thorness - Philomath Booster Club President
As you know, the 4th Annual Warrior Classic Basketball Tournament was held on February 13th &14th. Thirty-five teams traveled to Philomath to compete at the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. The tournament brought a lot of people to Philomath for the weekend, supporting the local business community. This very successful event was made possible by a collaborative effort on behalf of the Philomath School District, the Philomath Booster Club, the high school and middle school basketball teams and coaches, and the many families and friends who support basketball in Philomath.
This year’s tournament resulted in a net return of close to $7,000. The Booster Club Board has decided to allocate $4,000 to the high school basketball programs, to be divided equally between the girls and boys teams ($2,000 each). We also decided to set aside $1,500 to be available as matching funds for next year’s middle school tournament teams. Our goal is to invest in these younger teams to help them continue to enhance the sports programs feeding into the high school teams. The remaining funds will be used as start-up for next year’s tournament and to purchase a portable score clock for future tournaments (and for use as needed in Philomath).
After the tournament we had a meeting of the tournament organizers and Philomath middle school coaches participating in the tournament to recap the event and discuss improvements for next year. We received lots of feedback and will incorporate these changes into next year’s planning. As part of the matching fund program for middle school tournament teams, this year we had clean-up help from these teams and their parents. Next year we plan to continue this middle school matching program. We would also like additional help from the high school teams at the Sunday night clean-up and parents of the high school players to help cover the admission gates throughout the weekend. We believe this additional assistance from the high school teams and parents will help this annual fundraiser to continue to be successful for the basketball programs in Philomath.
Seven Philomath teams participated in this year’s tournament of 35 teams. Four of those seven teams placed 1st or 2nd in their division. This event provided an excellent opportunity for middle school teams to compete at a higher level and also provided the local community a glimpse of future Warriors.
We received numerous compliments on the tournament from both the participating coaches and parents who attended. Please express our appreciation to the student athletes and the parents who helped at the tournament. Stronger together—Warrior Nation! |
